Pre 1000 AD - The oldest Gaelic settlement Ath Cliath (hurdle-ford) takes its name from a man-made crossing point on the river close to the modern day Bow Street
1095 - St Michan's Church is founded. For 600 years it remains the only parish church on the north side of the city
1192 - King John's Charter describes the entire Oxmantown area; the place name derives from the Latin villa ostmannorum meaning 'Ostman's town' from Old Norse Austmann or 'men from the east'
1315 - Stones are removed from the Dominican Priory to reinforce the city walls against the impending Bruce attack
1348 - John Grauntsut obtains letters patent allowing him to found a chapel on the bridge of Dublin dedicated to the Virgin Mary
1466 - A gate is built at Hangman Lane now Hammond Lane leading to the gallows on Oxmantown Green
1470 - A gate is built at Comyn Lane now May Lane
1541 - A formal marketplace for cattle is established on Oxmantown Green to the west of Smithfield
1664 - The City Assembly sets out Smithfield, Haymarket and Queen Street in 96 plots to be disposed of by lottery
1668 - The Hospital and Free School of King Charles II on Oxmantown Green known as the Blue Coat School is founded
1675 - John Odacio Formica establishes the first flint crystal glasshouse on Haymarket exporting high quality glassware extensively to the New World
1879 - The buildings at the southern end of Smithfield are demolished increasing the size of the marketplace
1883 - An outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease closes the market for several years and results in Smithfield being paved in setts
1965 - Smithfield is used as 'Checkpoint Charlie' in Martin Ritt's adaptation of John Le Carré's "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold” starring Richard Burton
1997 - An international design competition for the redevelopment of Smithfield Civic Plaza is won by McGarry NiEanaigh Architects
2000 - Smithfield is the venue for conferring the Freedom of the City on the members of the band U2 and human rights campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi
2012 - The regeneration of the Smithfield Civic Plaza is completed by Dublin City Council
