This plaque is presented to the City of San Francisco by the Department of State on behalf of the government of the United States of America to commemorate the use of the War Memorial Opera House of San Francisco for all plenary sessions of the Japanese Peace Conference. In this building on September 8, 1951 the Japanese Peace Treaty was signed by the representatives of forty nine nations.

Regarding Birthplace of The United Nations. In 1951 the Treaty of Peace with Japan re-established peaceful relations between Japan and the Allied Powers on behalf of the United Nations by ending the legal state of war and providing for redress for hostile actions up to and including World War II. It was signed by 49 nations on 8 September 1951 in San Francisco at the War Memorial Opera House.
In 1985 this site was designated California Historical Landmark No. 964, Birthplace of The United Nations, War Memorial Complex - “President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated the War Memorial Complex in San Francisco to be the place that the United Nations Conderence for Internation Organization would convene on April 25, 1945. Fifty nations participated in the drafting of the United Nations Charter which was unanimously adopted June 25 and signed by representatives of the 50 nations in the War Memorial Veterans Building on June 26. The site of the signing of the Charter is one of the most significant historical landmarks sites in the world for 20th century events.”
