South Lawn

One of the primary landscape features of the property is the wide and gently sloping South Lawn which served both ornamental and functional purposes. Influenced by late 18th century English landscape design with informal and naturalistic, rather than formal and geometric compositions, the grass meadow was framed on each side by large shade trees. When the house was completed in 1816, views of the Potomac River and the bustling port of Georgetown were unobstructed. Later, the construction of houses directly across Q Street altered the view. In the early 20th century, hay, used as fodder for the livestock, was grown and harvested on the South Lawn.
