The original Box Knot, located on the east side of the Center Walk, fell into disrepair during the Civil War. The garden's design was lost until 1929, when Armistead Peter 3rd "rediscovered" it in the book Historic Gardens of Virginia, which documented a recreation of it at Avenel, a cousin's Virginia estate. Using this design, Armistead Peter 3rd reconstructed the Box Knot here in 1933. Tudor Place continues to maintain the health of the boxwood plants against new threats, like boxwood blight.
