Inscription.

(English translation:)

The Square (simply, "the square") - this is what this space, the civic center of Rates, has always been called, whose current name alludes to the royal documents (the Forais) which, since the late Middle Ages, gave this town administrative autonomy which lasted more than 6 centuries and of which the City Council building and the Manueline Pillar are major symbols, 'which precisely preside over the organization of this noble corner, in the center of which it would come to be placed, in the 19th century, by enlarging a primitive niche, the Capela do Senhor da Praça. This is a unique situation: just a few meters from the austere Romanesque style, the Chapel offers us the exuberance of Baroque sculpture.

Excerpt (in translation): S. Pedro de Rates is a village with ancient “documents” that experienced its golden period in the Middle Ages, strongly marking the economic and cultural life of the region. It maintained an autonomy that lasted more than six centuries and whose main symbols remained the building of the old Town Hall and the Pelourinho (Manueline) (“Manueline Pillar”), classified as a National Monument. In 1836 it became part of the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim. In the center of this Square, surrounded by the most “noble” houses, the Senhor da Praça chapel, from the 18th century, stands out, adorned with exuberant baroque altars. In 1997 and 98, this entire public space underwent rehabilitation works.
