Inscription.
Thomas Jefferson. . Jeffersonville is named for President Thomas Jefferson, who had a profound influence on the city. As a Virginia legislator, Jefferson was a strong supporter of General George Rogers Clark's Illinois campaign from 1778 to 1779, which resulted in the land grant that composes most of Clark County. The Lewis and Clark Expedition launched in 1803 at the nearby Falls of the Ohio was conceived and supported by Jefferson. The Expedition was the first exploration of the newly acquired territory known then as the Louisiana Purchase. Countless natural wonders and animals were discovered. Most members of the Lewis and Clark expedition returned here at the end of their journey.
