Inscription. Richard S. Reynolds Sr. (1881-1955) was an industrialist and poet, whose breadth of vision, common sense, and patriotism compelled him to take uncommon risks to prepare the American aluminum industry for war. The penultimate stanza of his poem “An American Credo” opens a window on a man whose deeds reflect the valor, fidelity, and sacrifice this Memorial exists to honor
I abhor the beaten path. Not for me
The cowbell or the curfew. I shun
The smooth highroad strung
With signs of warning and safety signals.
I dare the darkness to reach the dawn.

By Resolution of the Board of Directors of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation on 17 March 2006, the Richard S. Reynolds Sr. Garden of the National D-Day Memorial is named in tribute to him.
