1. Gold Star Family Memorial Garden Marker
Inscription. By design separate and modest in scope, this garden exists to recognize the irreplaceable loss experienced by families whose parents, children, spouses, and siblings die in battle. Planted away from the components of the Memorial that deal with the planning for and execution of the D-Day assault, it emphasizes the physical gulf that separates the homefront from the frontline as well as the familial bonds of love that bridge the two. While at this Memorial, and in the days ahead, take time to remember Gold Star Families. Rudyard Kipling has it right: loss is loss.

These were our children who died for our lands. They were dear in our sight./We have only the memory of there home - treasured sayings and laughter. /The price of our loss shall be paid to our hands, not another’s hereafter. /Neither the alien nor priest shall decide on it. That is our right. But shall return us the children?
From “The Children,” In a Diversity of Creatures, 1917.

In lasting tribute to the family of Captain Arthur G. Bonifas, USMA 1966, who stood and waited while he served in Vietnam and who stood and waited while he served in the Republic of Korea until he was killed on 18 August 1976. Given by a fellow Redleg who remembers LZ Nicole.
