1. The Shelley-Howerton House Marker

Inscription.
The oldest house in Sugar Hill, the Shelley-Howerton home, was built in the 1860s. It was originally a saddlebag house with two rooms and a central chimney. Later additions resulted in a gable winged cottage. The home, with 249 acres, was purchased in 1883 by William and Elizabeth Shelley. The family owned gold mines located on Level Creek Road until 1941 when the Amphlett brothers acquired the business. The mines produced a high quality of ore, but it was costly to operate. Charlotte Howerton, granddaughter of William and Elizabeth, lived in this home until 2015.
