1. The Liberty Trail Marker
Inscription. An extensive fortress protected Charleston during the Revolutionary War. It was destroyed long ago, but remnants of its formidable tabby walls-cement made with oyster shells- lie just below the surface of these grounds. A fragment is preserved above ground on Marion Square as a reminder of the structure that once stood here. Follow the eight, circular, bronze markers to discover the piece of history, trace the footprint of Charleston's Horn Work, and learn about its role in the struggle for independence.
