City Lore
Rise Up!
— Activism on the Lower East Side —
For hundreds of years, my family of artists has been promoting humanity and what it can do. I promote this neighborhood. The streets of the Lower East Side are not paved with gold – they’re paved with mosaics! These aren’t just my artworks; passersby contribute. I’m pulling generations of people together to learn to mark the neighborhood’s living moments, the ones that mean something and that we have to pass on to others. They allow people to say “yes!” to having a future. Making mosaics is almost a form of meditation, and it leaves you in an exhausted state. This is hard work! I’ve decorated twenty light poles at Astor Place. They all sparkle at once. When you come here, you’re supposed to be healed. Here I am being a prophet when I should be making one, please! – Jim Power, New York City’s “Mosaic Man
