Bayard Grosh House. 422 East Front Street. Four generations of the Hostetter-Carroll family have called this Federal style house home since 1925, when Katie Hostetter's grandfather, Joseph Carroll (1898-1986), purchased it. Her "Grandma Carroll" marked the living room wall in pencil to show the level to which the 1936 flood waters rose. Over the last twenty-eight years, much time and energy has been lavished on this beloved home to refurbish it and highlight its present charm. The house was built in 1849 by Jacob K. Stibgen (1808-1879), a wealthy lumber merchant, for his son-in-law, James A. Bayard Grosh (1816-1853). During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the house was used as a commercial bakery. The bake oven was once located directly behind the house, only a few feet from the back door, and decades later a bread paddle from this business was found stashed in the rafters of the attic. This house is very similar to the neighboring house just to the east, and the history of both homes emphasizes the close family ties of past and present generations of Mariettians occupying them. , James C. The following year, 1804, James Anderson IV, who operated Anderson's Ferry, laid out and sold lots adjacent to Cooke's in the western end that he called Waterford. These two developments were incorporated in 1812 to form Marietta Borough.
