Nuttallburg in Fayette County, West Virginia — The American South (Appalachia)
Home Sweet Home
New River Gorge National River
The mine company built houses which they leased to workers, usually deducting rent from pay. A typical house was one-story, with a kitchen, dining room, and two bedrooms. Some were two-story. But not all employees lived in company houses here at the gorge bottom. Some workers, by saving for years, owned their own homes at the top of the gorge.
It seemed to be the ambition of all bottom men to own their own home on top and many did have the will power to... save their money and own their own home in about ten years.
John Nuttall II, grandson of Nuttallburg founder John Nuttall
This view of the slope of South Nuttall across the river illustrates typical mine workers' homes. Houses here in Nuttallburg probably looked much like these.
Because of the gorge's steep slope, houses were cut into the hillside or supported by piers.
