1. Trail to Seldom Seen Marker

Inscription. Sounds frightening doesn't it? It sounds like if you take this trail you might not be seen again. Fear not. Seldom Seen was the name of a community that once existed about 4 mile from here. Visiting the site of Seldom Seen takes about 30 minutes. It is about 1⁄2 mile round-trip.

Built in the early 1900s, Seldom Seen was a small housing area, a "suburb" of sorts, that served Nuttallburg. Nuttallburg miners and their families lived there.

Seldom Seen's location was undoubtedly a conseqence of New River Gorge's topography. As a gorge community grew, the only place flat enough for new houses was the narrow shelf along the river. Nuttallburg couldn't expand upward on the gorge wall; it had to expand lengthwise along the river. Seldom Seen had about two dozen houses. Today only foundations remain.
