Valley City in Barnes County, North Dakota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
66 Lb. Rail
These 1895 dated rails were taken up from the building site of the Rosebud Visitor Center. While the original Northern Pacific rails at this site were laid in 1872, lighter rail such as this tend to wear out more quickly. Early locomotives were not as powerful as later models. This 66 pound rail was more than sufficient. As loads got heavier, the rails also got heavier. Note the worn and flattened top of the rail showing extensive wear.
