Germantown. . The area of North Nashville known as "Germantown" was first settled in the late 1700s by the McGavock family. During the first half of the 19th century, the McGavocks began selling parcels of their property, many of which were bought by German immigrants who were moving with their families into the area. The architecturally significant Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was dedicated in 1859, and it remains the second-oldest standing Catholic Church in Nashville. Germantown also became one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Nashville due to an influx of freed slaves who stayed there because of the benevolence of the German population towards them. , Photo Captions , Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and David McGavock.
