Cooperation
Mormons converts migrated to the west seeking a place to gather as a people and find refuge from religious persecution. They faced many challenges as they established settlements in Central Utah.
The pioneers arrived with very few supplies, and the conditions in Sanpete Valley were harsh. In addition, the people came from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and spoke different languages.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the bleak circumstances, the pioneers united. Under the direction of their religious leaders, they carefully planned their communities. Manti became a supply hub for smaller satellite communities such as Mt. Pleasant and Ephraim. Together, the pioneers transformed the arid desert into a thriving string of communities.
Unlike traditional homesteading in the West, which focused primarily on individual families, the pioneers in Central Utah colonized more effectively by sharing resources and working together.
Laboring together, the pioneers built community irrigation systems, canals, roads, and fences.
Once settled, the pioneers established local governemnts and erected public buildings. Labor, time, and materials were donated to suport building projects.
