Syracuse in Davis County, Utah — The American Mountains (Southwest)
First School House
Early settlers knew the importance of education. In 1885, a one-room schoolhouse was constructed on this site, and all 8 grades met together. Textbooks were scarce, but the students learned reading, writing, and arithmetic. Unfortunately, most children missed many school days to help on their family's farms. The student who got five months of schooling a year was lucky.
