Vor Jahrhunderten wurden im Untergrund des Burgbergs eine Vielzahl von Gewölben und Gängen aus dem Fels geschlagen. Dank der großen Standfestigkeit des Burgsandsteins war es möglich, teilweise über vier Stockwerke reichende Felsenkelleranlagen zu schaffen, die seit 1380 zur Gärung und Lagerung von Bier genutzt wurden.

Die geheimnisumwitterten unterirdischen Gänge dienten ausschließlich der Gewinnung und Weiterleitung von Wasser. Während des Krieges fanden in den Gewölben viele Bürger Schutz vor Luftangriffen. Ein kleiner Teil des Labyrinths wird auch heute wieder von der Hausbrauerei Altstadthof genützt, die nach der Führung besichtigt werden kann.

Medieval rockcellars
Extensive complexes of cellars - in some places up to four storeys deep were used primarily for the making and storing of beer. During the devastating air raids of World War II, many citizens of Nuremberg sought and found shelter in the historic beer cellars.
