1. Captain's Room Marker
Inscription. This room was enclosed from the open sleeping porch about 1880. On an island where nothing went to waste, the panelling is recycled piano crate likely salvaged from a shipwreck at that time. After entering the room, look back over the doorway at the unusual carpentry; perhaps rum was involved? It is believed that Capt. Watlington spent his final years in this room, while the house was filled with younger family and tenants. Some his seafaring possessions are on display. Today, we dedicate this room to the 1800's maritime history of Key West: the wreckers, the sailors, the Navy and Army, and the rapid growth of the city as a result of the Cuban cigar industry.
