Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
Down The River
Many of the Africans brought to Louisiana during the colonial period were from the Senegambia area of West Africa. The Africans who were brought to America were selected largely because of their agricultural and technological knowledge and skills.
The institution of slavery did not destroy all elements of African culture or the legacy, of African survivors and their descendants. For example, the Louisiana word 'gumbo' is derived from 'gombo' which is the African (Congo) word 'ngumbo', which- means okra.
