1. Nauvoo's Wards Marker
Inscription. Like other Illinois cities, Nauvoo was divided into administrative units called wards. Latter-day Saints today still use the term to describe the physical and ecclesiastical boundaries of congregations.

·Knight Street marks the north-south boundary between Nauvoo's original 1st and 4th Wards. Wells Street (west of the temple) marks the east-west boundary between the Nauvoo 3rd and 4th Wards.

·Nauvoo's bishops organized the care of the poor by ward. The number of wards grew with the city, so by 1843 there were bishops serving the people in 10 wards. Bishop Edward Hunter served in the Nauvoo 5th Ward.
