The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) 1933-1942
Beginning in 1933, hundreds of people were employed at Ocmulgee by the various "New Deal" public works agencies created during the Great Depression. They worked on the archeological excavations of the area that uncovered over 2.5 million artifacts, becoming the largest "dig" in America's history, with a payroll of 800 workers. The most popular of these agencies was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In May 1937, two hundred young men, 17 to 23 years of age, began arriving at Ocmulgee. The CCC youth assisted with construction projects, including the Earth Lodge, beginning work on the museum, constructing two miles of roads, parking lots, and a pedestrian bridge to the Earth Lodge.
They lived in military-style barracks, and received $30.00 monthly, of which $25.00 was sent home to their families. The Ocmulgee CCC Program was closed in July 1942 due to America's entry into World War II. Many of the young men continued in the service of their country in the armed services.
On November 12, 1983, a reunion was held for the CCC Company 1426 NM-4. Approximately 82 members attended the event with their families. On December 3, 2011, Ocmulgee National Monument commemorated its 75th Anniversary. Guests included surviving CCC members, and family of deceased members.
