De Batavierenstraat is vernoemd naar het feit dat in de vorige eeuw veel goederen door slepers werden vervoerd, dit werd gedaan op sleeλn of met lange wagens met paarden ervoor. Rond 1860 noemde een vereniging van slepers zich 'de Batavieren te paard'. De vereniging was vaak van de partij bij de vele optochten die ter gelegenheid van locale en nationale feesten en manifestaties werden gehouden. De Batavieren te paard genoten een grote populariteit. Zo groot zelfs dat in 1865 deze straat naar hen werd vernoemd.

(English translation:)
The Batavierenstraat is named after the fact that in the last century many goods were transported by drayage, this was done on sleds or with long wagons with horses in front. Around 1860 an association of draymen called themselves 'the Batavians on horseback'. The association was often involved in the many parades held on the occasion of local and national festivals and events. The Batavians on horseback enjoyed great popularity. So big in fact that this street was named after them in 1865.
