Regarding Vietnam War Memorial. Pfc. Robert Nathaniel Latimer was a 25-year-old Marine who was mortally wounded by an enemy mortar in Quang Nam Province on June 8, 1969. He is buried in Elm Lawn Memorial Park in Elmhurst, about 3 miles west of here.
William John Schultz was born in Chicago and raised in suburban Stone Park. A graduate of Proviso West High School, he was serving as a Marine rifleman when he died of fragmentation wounds on August 20, 1966 at the age of 19.
Charles E. Stokes was 17 years old when he enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1965, and a year later he was with mortar battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines in Phu Bai in Thua Thien Province. On September 10, 1966, the battery came under attack, and the mortar fire killed five men and eight were
injured, including Pfc. Stokes. Stokes died in the hospital on Clarke Air Force Base in the Philippines on September 17, a bit more than two weeks shy of his 19th birthday. Stokes is buried at Fairview Memorial Park in Northlake, about 2½ miles northwest of this plaque.
