Irawan Soejono
Pasoeroean (Oost-Java), 24 januari 1920 - Leiden, 13 januari 1945
Together with other Indonesian students, Irawan Soejono, who had lived in the Netherlands since 1930, joined the resistance in Leiden. His pseudonym was Henk van de Bevrijding, named after the resistance magazine 'De Bevrijding' (Liberation) of Perhimpoenan Indonesia, the Indonesian student organization in the Netherlands. For these resistance fighters the war did not end with the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945; they went on to fight for Indonesian independence. Soejono did not get to fight this battle. On January 13, 1945 he came across a raid on Breestraat. Because he had things with him for printing the resistance magazine, he tried to flee. He was then shot dead by a German soldier. After his death the members of his resistance group changed their name to Group Irawan. In 1990, this street was the first to be named after an Indonesian resistance fighter.
