John Quaderer, founder of Barron, and one of the founders of Barron County, was born in Switzerland, July 16, 1829. He came to America in 1852, landed at New Orleans, and found his way to Chicago. In 1853 he went to Dubuque, Iowa, where he entered the employ of Knapp, Stout & Company, working in their lumberyards. He was soon to Menomonie, Wisconsin, and in 1854 into Barron County, at first as a foreman, and later as a contractor. In the 1860s he opened a camp at Barron and was thereafter identified with its history. He gave the land where the courthouse is now located and made many other benefactions. He platted the village of Barron. John was a real leader and served in numerous county offices, including County Treasurer and Chairman of the County Board. From 1870 to 1878 he was postmaster. He was elected alderman when the city was incorporated.
