The former Croesus Gold Mine is renowned for having produced some of the highest-grade gold mined in Ontario. Total historical Croesus mine gold production from milled ore as reported by the Ontario Department of Mines was 14,854 ounces gold from 5,333 short tons milled for an average grade of 2.78 oz gold per short ton. Research by a previous owner suggests that the above-reported milled ore production did not include the very high-grade gold ore which was shipped directly to the Canadian Mint for processing. Five (5) gold samples purchased by the Ontario Bureau of Mines for exhibition purposes and now in possession of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Ontario weigh 85 pounds collectively and contain 480.7 ounces of gold or 11,310 oz gold per short ton.(Submitted on April 17, 2024, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)

Today, a hunk of gold ore sits at Queens Park in Toronto as a testament to the riches formerly found in the Matheson area. Matheson was the site of the famous Croesus mine discovery of 1914. The largest concentration of pure gold ever to be found was discovered. A pure gold nugget measuring 2 x 1.25 was removed (a model of it is at the museum in Matheson). Gold was so rich that it was mined at an unbelievable 5,945 ounces per ton. The vein was lost about 2 years later the time of the Great Fire.(Submitted on April 17, 2024, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
