Inscription.
Getting an education on the edge of the western Missouri frontier could be difficult. In the early 1800s, farm families lived miles apart and relied on private primary schools. Sometimes people hired tutors or governesses to teach their children. By the mid-1860s, academies and subscription schools were formed, followed by the free public school system known today.

Up the hill before you once stood the Holmes Park School. Children from the nearby Holmes Park community attended classes here, following in the tradition of frontier education.

[Captions:]
Holmes Park School (above), built in 1916 and used until 1979, replaced an earlier one-room frame building known as Hart Grove School (built in the 1870s). These schools were part of the 1902 Hickman Mills consolidated school system the first such system formed in Missouri.
