Bill and Mike Veeck
Baseball Operations Fellows
Bill Veeck was without question baseball's most creative genius. His Hall of Fame plaque in Cooperstown celebrates his ingenious promotions and commitment to fan participation and concludes with: "a champion of the little guy." In 1947, as owner of the Cleveland Indians, Bill signed Larry Doby to integrate the American League. His 1970 testimony in support of Curt Flood's lawsuit helped open the door for free agency.
Mike Veeck, who has shared his wit and wisdom with a combined 17 minor and major league teams for a half-century, set a new standard for baseball fans with his Fun Is Good philosophy. Known for his innovative promotions and thought-provoking giveaways, Veeck's culture of creativity is dedicated to customer satisfaction. When asked what he learned from his dad, Mike Veeck says, "It's all about the fans. If you pay attention to the fans, you will always do OK."
