Inscription. This plaque commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Captain Matthew Flinders R.N. at Donington, England. On 16th March, 1774 Captain Flinders was the first person to circumnavigate this continent and was largely responsible for the use of the name "Australia." He determined the geographical position of this point in 1795 and again in 1802 and used it as the initial point in his surveys of Port Jackson and the coastline of Australia.
