Inscription.
Courthouse Square Park. . By 1843, this corner of the old town square contained the county's first log jail, whipping post, and stocks. In 1893, Stanly County's second courthouse (pictured), a tall, two-story, Victorian-style building, was constructed on this site. Even though the building was renovated and remodeled in 1926, a number of efforts over the decades that followed were made to replace it until it was finally demolished in 1973. Once a part of the public lands that surrounded the courthouse, the present layout of Courthouse Square Park was dedicated in 1996.
