1. Courthouse Square Park Marker
Inscription. By 1843, this corner of the old town square contained the county's first log jail, whipping post, and stocks. In 1893, Stanly County's second courthouse (pictured), a tall, two-story, Victorian-style building, was constructed on this site. Even though the building was renovated and remodeled in 1926, a number of efforts over the decades that followed were made to replace it until it was finally demolished in 1973. Once a part of the public lands that surrounded the courthouse, the present layout of Courthouse Square Park was dedicated in 1996.
