Inscription. The Russian 120mm mortar served as an indirect fire weapon for the Soviet Union and its allies during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Conflict. This artillery mortar had a two-wheeled pneumatic carriage, consisting of a frame, tongue, supports, and baseplate. The carriage protected the mortar tube and carried ammunition boxes. The entire unit weighed 2,530 pounds.

A mortar consists. of a tube closed at the breech end that rests on a baseplate. Two adjustable legs or a frame support the muzzle end. The mortar is fired by dropping a shell down the muzzle. The shell makes contact with the firing pin in the breech, exploding the primer, and sending the shell on its way. Most mortar shells have stabilizing fins to keep them from tumbling in flight.

This short-range weapon, used to reach nearby targets protected by hills and other obstacles, has a higher angle of fire, shorter barrel, and lower muzzle velocity than a gun or howitzer. Artillery mortars have bore diameters of 105 millimeters or larger. Infantry mortars have diameters of less than 105 millimeters.

This Russian-made mortar was manufactured in 1943. It is unknown whether it was captured during World War II or in a later conflict.
