Branford resident and Army veteran, J. Andre Smith designed the Cenotaph as a memorial to World War I servicemen who lost their lives in battle and rest in foreign soil. Its granite carving reflects the Distinguished Service Cross, designed by J. Andre Smith, as commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson in 1918. Erected in 1923 by a committee of local citizens, the Cenotaph was restored in 2006 by the Branford Historical Society.
