Preston County Animal Shelter
Construction for the Preston County Animal Shelter began in 1991, and the shelter was completed in 1992. At the time, the shelter only had one dog warden - Bruce Corley, who served this position for thirteen years. Over time, the shelter has grown and has become a successful adoption and animal care facility. PCAS now employs a full-time staff, which includes two full-time dog wardens. The current adoption program is highly successful and saves the lives of many animals each year. The county pays for all animals to be spayed or neutered and microchipped. These efforts have drastically reduced the number of animals that are euthanized each year. County funds and donations from the community cover any veterinarian services needed for the animals in the shelter's care. The community is also a large part of the shelter's success. Numerous members of the community volunteer their time and donate money or items for animals at the shelter. It is the mission of PCAS to ensure that each pet goes to a home that is aware of the commitment of pet ownership and is capable and prepared to accept that responsibility.
