A sua construção iniciou-se em 1863, ficando concluída em Agosto de 1883. O projecto inicial de Tomás da Fonseca foi alterado, em 1868, por Domingos Parente, que traçou uma igreja sem nave. A partir de 1881, a obra passou para a direcção de José Monteiro.
Its construction began in 1863, being concluded in August of 1883. The initial project of Tomás da Fonseca was subject to changes in 1868, by the hand of Domingos Parente, who drew a church without a nave. From 1881 on, all works would be directed by José Monteiro.

Excerpt (in translation): The Church is located in the place where the Dominican nuns from the Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada in Mouraria settled in 1539. Badly ruined by the earthquake, the monastery was never rebuilt, with the parish headquarters of São José being transferred here(Submitted on May 11, 2024.)in 1883, displaced from the nearby Church of São José dos Carpinteiros. The nave of the church was never built, remaining at the level of the transept. Highlight is the marble altarpiece in the main chapel, with Solomonic columns, coming from the demolished Jesuit church of Colégio de Santo Antão, and surmounted by a sculptural group depicting the Glory of the Holy Trinity. The sacristy houses an 18th century terracotta nativity scene from the Machado de Castro school, originating from the old parish headquarters.Photographed by Andrew Ruppenstein, April 20, 20242.
