1. Roman York Marker
Inscription. The Ninth Legion built a massive fortress here when the Romans arrived in AD 71. Eboracum (York) was used as a base from which to control the North.

Originally it was a wooden structure, rebuilt in stone about AD 107. Towers that projected out from the walls were added in a later rebuilding phase; possibly for defence or for show. Part of the wall still remains near the main entrance and if you look closely you can see stones which protrude out from the line of the wall. This would have been one of the interval towers.

Although the fort was constructed nearly two thousand years ago, the West corner of it still towers above. today's visitors. Known as the Multangular Tower, because of its many sides, the smaller stones laid by the Romans remain. The larger stones on the upper half of the tower are later medieval additions.

Artefacts from Roman York can be seen in the Yorkshire Museum. Stone sarcophagi from excavations of Roman burials can be found in the Gardens.
