Lodewijk van Duuren
Tilburg, 5 augustus 1917 - Vught, 9 augustus 1944

(English translation:)
Mathematics and physics student Lodewijk van Duuren fought as a conscript soldier during the May days of 1940. After the demobilization he became involved in the distribution of the resistance magazine Trouw. At the end of 1943, the Sicherheitsdienst (”German Security Police”) raided the Amsterdam headquarters of this newspaper. Van Duuren was warned in time and quickly tried to hide incriminating material, but was eventually arrested. From the police detention center in Haaren he smuggled messages out of the prison to warn other resistance members at Trouw. Ultimately, thirty-nine people were arrested and taken to Camp Vught. On his 27th birthday, Van Duuren was sentenced to death. A few days later he stood before the firing squad together with other Trouw distributors.

Excerpt (in translation): Death sentence - The group of thirty-nine was transferred to Camp Vught at the end of July 1944. The twenty-four distributors were sentenced to death on August 5, 1944, the day Van Duuren turned twenty-seven. Four days later, August 9, the sentence is carried out on six of them, including Van Duuren. The next day, seventeen distributors faced the firing squad. One distributor was pardoned: Andries Gort, who immortalized Van Duuren in a portrait drawing during his captivity in Haarlem.
