Inscription.
In about 1870, the Dayton Railroad Company began operating the first horse-driven streetcar on Third Street between McGee and Findlay streets. The streetcar made travel from new areas to the city convenient, enticing residents to build their houses in quiet neighborhoods away from downtown. The electric streetcar was introduced in 1888, when the White Line began operating from North Main Street to the Soldier's Home on Gettysburg Avenue. Under different forms, streetcars continued operation in Dayton until 1947, when they were replaced by newer bus lines.
