La rue Fortuny
| — | Histoire de Paris | — |
With its two rows of private mansions, Rue Fortuny is the archetype of the rue de la plaine Monceau at the end of the 19th century. It was opened in 1876 on land belonging to the animal painter Godefroy Jadin. Among the most remarkable constructions, the mansion at number 8 is the most curious, with its Renaissance facade decorated with stone statues. It was designed by the architects Boland and Latapy, as well as several mansions on the street, including number 2 where Edmond Rostand resided. At number 13 lived Marcel Pagnol. The construction is a delicate mix of stone and brick highlighted by mosaic, marble and wrought iron. Nos. 27 and 29 have parallel destinies. Works by the same architect, Adolphe Vieil, they have many points in common and were inhabited by two queens of Parisian nights Caroline Otero, nicknamed "Belle Otero" and Geneviève Lantelme, the famous actress. No. 35 was built for Sarah Bernhardt by Felix Escalier in 1876. No. 42 was the mansion of master glassmaker Joseph-Albert Ponsin, built by Boland in 1879. Unfortunately, it no longer has the magnificent award-winning glass roof that it had at the exhibition of 1878. However, you can still admire a magnificent portrait of Bernard Palissy in mosaic.
