Rechtsgeleerde op het gebied van het internationaal privaatrecht en handelsrecht. Groeide op in Brussel. Na zijn promotie in Leiden begon hij in Amsterdam zijn carriθre als advocaat en was hij enkele jaren directeur van verzekeringsmaatschappij Flevo. Hij volgde eind 1893 Tobias Asser op als hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Josephus Jitta maakte zich daarnaast sterk voor internationale afspraken tot bescherming van industrieel eigendom. De Octrooiwet uit 1910 is voor een groot deel door hem samengesteld. Hij was politiek actief als gemeenteraadslid in Amsterdam, waar hij pleitte voor de teruggave van het Paleis op de Dam als stadhuis, en als Statenlid van Noord-Holland. Erkenning kreeg hij met de benoeming tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw (1903) en het lidmaatschap van de Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen (1919).
Legal scholar in the field of private international law and commercial law. Grew up in Brussels. After receiving his PhD in Leiden, he started his career as a lawyer in Amsterdam and was director of the insurance company Flevo for several years. At the end of 1893 he succeeded Tobias Asser as professor at the University of Amsterdam. Josephus Jitta also advocated international agreements to protect industrial property. The Patent Act of 1910 was largely composed by him. He was politically active as a city councilor in Amsterdam, where he advocated for the return of the Royal Palace on Dam Square as a city hall, and as a member of Parliament for Noord-Holland. He received recognition with an appointment of Knight in the Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw (Order of the Netherlands Lion) (1903) and membership in the Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen (Royal Academy of Sciences) (1919).

Jitta believed in an international world order and he considered the creation of something like the United States of Europe a possibility. He also believed in world peace, even after World War I. People had to understand that they were not only citizens of nations, but also members of the human race, citizens of the world.
