Air Defense
M-167 Vulcan Air Defense System (VADS)
Designed to protect forward area combat units and rear logistical assets, the Vulcan was a towed, short-range anti-aircraft gun used by the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during Operation Desert Storm and was the primary anti-aircraft weapon of the Division from 1970-1990. In 1994, it was replaced by the M-1097 Humvee-mounted missile launcher.

M-1097 Avenger Air Defense System
Introduced during the build-up to the Gulf War, the Avenger consisted of a gyro-stabilized turret mounted on a modified Humvee. It could be linked to Forward Area Air Defense Command, permitting external radar tracks and messages to reach the fire unit who could then warn the gunners of approaching aircraft.
