The longtime public address announcer for the Orioles, Rex Barney was as recognized and beloved as any of the players whose names he announced. His trademark calls of "Give that fan a contract!" and "Thank youuu" echoed beyond Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards to generations of fans. A former pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Rex threw a no-hitter against the rival New York Giants in 1948 during a 6-year big league career. After several years filling in, he became the full-time p.a. voice of the Orioles in 1974 and remained until his sudden death in August 1997, at the age of 1972. Few p.a. announcers in history have had as much impact on their audience and their teams.
