Cal Ripken, Sr. was a player, scout, coach and manager in the Orioles organization in a career that covered 36 seasons. From 1976-1986 and 1989-1992 he served as an Orioles major league coach, first in the bullpen then later replacing fellow Oriole's Hall of Famer Bill Hunter as the club's first base coach, where he spent 13 ½ seasons. He managed the Orioles in 1987 and briefly in 1988, compiling a 68-101 record. A lifelong resident of Aberdeen, MD, he had the distinction of coaching and managing two of his sons with the Orioles: Cal Ripken Jr. and Bill Ripken, the first time a father had managed a pair of sons in the majors.
