Inscription. In 1779, George Rogers Clark and 175 soldiers marched from Ft. Kaskaskia through southern Illinois to Ft. Vincennes, Indiana and captured that fort. This march led them through what became known as the Meadow in the Hole, Oakdale, Illinois.
