a second generation of wealthy families who chose East High Street as the site for their new homes. Most of these newcomers had served as officers in the Union Army and were making their civilian reputations in a variety of professions.… Mount Vernon merchants who lived in the neighborhood included George W. Stahl (122) who specialized in “fancy notions” according to the 1876 city directory, Joshua Hyde (300) a wealthy silversmith, and grocers Clark Armstrong (506) and G.W. Armstrong (601).

According to American Silversmiths, Hyde (1813-1881) was a silversmith and jeweler in Mount Vernon from circa 1840 into the 1870s, at times partnering with William Mitchell Young and Levi Stone.
