Station Valkenburg

Valkenburg Railway Station
Built in 1853, this railway station is closely connected to the rise of Valkenburg, first as a health- and spa destination for the affluent and later as a more general tourist destination. The design of the main building can be characterized as the neo-Gothic 'English style'. This can be seen, among others, in the corner turrets and crenellations that evoke the atmosphere of a castle and medieval architecture.

History (in translation): Valkenburg station was built on behalf of the Aachen-Maastrichtsche Spoorweg-Maatschappij, which built the Aachen - Maastricht railway line from 1845, the first international train connection in the Netherlands.[1] The building, constructed from marl blocks, was designed by Jacobus Enschedι in the style of early English neo-Gothic. Enschedι was inspired by the palace of King William II in Tilburg. The station was opened on October 23, 1853. In 1890, two detached buildings on the sides were demolished to make way for side wings, which adjoin the main building.
