Sam Viviano en zijn vrouw Marie woonden in St. Louis en hadden 2 zonen; Marion van tien en Stephen van acht. Sam werkte als vrachtwagenchauffeur bij een bloemist.
Op 26 januari 1944 meldde Sam zich in de kazerne van Jefferson Barracks Missouri om het leger in te gaan.
Op zaterdag 16 september 1944 is Sam Viviano ιιn van de eerste Amerikanen die in Valkenburg vanuit de Pelerinstraat, door de Geul, via de toenmalige Dancing Casino, het huidige Casinoplein, in de Jan Deckerstraat komen. Daar wordt Sam dodelijk getroffen door Duits mitrailleurvuur vanuit Dancing Pavillon. Het lichaam van Sam wordt neergelegd in de garage van touringcar- bedrijf Splendid Cars, nu de brandweerkazerne aan de Julianalaan.
Sam Viviano werd tijdelijk in Fosses-la-Ville bij Namen begraven en later gerepatrieerd om begraven te worden op Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, een militaire begraafplaats nabij de kazerne waar hij op 26 januari 1944 in dienst trad.

Sam Viviano and his wife Marie lived in St. Louis and had 2 sons; Marion, ten, and Stephen, eight. Sam worked as a truck driver for a florist.
On January 26, 1944, Sam reported to the barracks at Jefferson Barracks Missouri to enlist in the Army.
On Saturday, September 16, 1944, Sam Viviano was one of the first Americans to arrive in Valkenburg from the Pelerinstraat, through the Geul, via the then Dancing Casino, the current Casinoplein, to the Jan Deckerstraat. There, Sam was fatally hit by German machine gun fire coming from the Dancing Pavillon. Sam's body was placed in the garage of touring car company Splendid Cars, now the fire station on Julianalaan.
Sam Viviano was temporarily buried in Fosses-la-Ville near Namur and later repatriated for burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, a military cemetery near the barracks where he enlisted on January 26, 1944.

The marker is visible here next to the Old Hickory Bridge (Old Hickory being the nickname of the US Army 30th Infantry Division, which liberated Valkenburg in September, 1944). The middle-aged couple in bathing suits, visible here, are statues. A number of such slightly larger than life statues have been strategically placed throughout the town.
