1. The Republican News/Republican Publishing Marker
Inscription. Mount Vernon has been home to at least nine newspapers over the last two hundred years, including five that had the word “Republican” in the name.

The Republican Newspaper was founded by William H. Cochran in 1898. Typical daily papers in the early 1900s, it included articles, obituaries, and advertisements. Articles were published about the flood of 1913, the death of Daniel Decatur Emmett, and many others about economics and farming.

The newspaper's owner also published a semi-weekly paper, The Knox County Republican News.

In the mid-1930s The Republican News purchased and merged with its main rival newspaper and became The Mount Vernon News.
