Excerpt (in translation): The German occupation of Gulpen lasted four years, four months and four days (May 10, 1940 – September 13, 1944). The day that the residents of Gulpen regained their freedom was a long time ago. Freedom cannot be taken for granted and the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem also reflects on this annually during Remembrance Day and the commemoration at the war memorial in Cartils and Wagelerbos. Until now, there was no special memorial place in Gulpen-Wittem for the liberators of the Second World War. This has now been implemented at the initiative of veteran Sjeng Steijns.
